Cron Expression Generator

Cron expression for every Friday

The cron expression to run a job every Friday is:

0 9 * * 5

At 9:00 AM, only on Friday.

Friday is 5 (or FRI) in the day-of-week field. In most Arab countries it is the first day of the weekend rather than the last working day, so an end-of-week report there usually belongs on Thursday (0 17 * * 4). Standard cron cannot express "the last Friday of the month" (5L is Quartz-only); run every Friday and let the job check whether next week falls in a new month: 0 9 * * 5 [ "$(date -d '+7 days' +\%m)" != "$(date +\%m)" ] && command.

      on:
        schedule:
          - cron: '0 9 * * 5' # always UTC

GitHub Actions evaluates schedules in UTC, does not accept macros such as @daily, and will not run workflows more often than every 5 minutes; runs can also be delayed during periods of high load.

      Frequently asked questions

      What does 0 9 * * 5 mean in cron?

At 9:00 AM, only on Friday. The five fields are minute 0, hour 9, day of month *, month * and day of week 5.

How do I run a cron job every Friday in Linux?

Run crontab -e, add the line 0 9 * * 5 /path/to/command, then save and exit. Use absolute paths, redirect output to a log file, and confirm it runs with grep CRON /var/log/syslog.

      When will 0 9 * * 5 run next?

It depends on the current time and the time zone of the machine running cron. The calculator on this page shows the next 5 run times in your local time zone; on a server, cron uses the system time zone, which is often UTC.
